Role Overview:
We are looking for a Senior AWS Cloud and FinOps Engineer to drive cloud financial management at MontyCloud. This is a FinOps-first role that operates across two dimensions.
First, you will bring deep FinOps expertise into the product. You will lead research, build POCs, and shape how AI and generative AI transform cloud financial management. Your work influences product direction on FinOps and billing capabilities that ultimately reach MSP partners and their customers.
Second, you will own MontyCloud's internal cloud spend strategy: commitment portfolio decisions, executive dashboards, cost reviews, and financial governance. You will drive cost conversations directly with leadership and be the organization's authority on FinOps.
We are looking for someone who has run FinOps as a function before, has strong opinions backed by proven experience, and can come up with the best ideas for cost optimization and financial governance at scale.
Non-Negotiables:
- Must have led FinOps as a function at an enterprise or SaaS company, not just contributed to it.
- Must have owned commitment portfolio decisions (Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, Spot) for environments with $1M+/year cloud spend, with documented outcomes.
- Must have built and maintained executive-level FinOps dashboards using QuickSight, PowerBI, or equivalent, sourced from Cost and Usage Reports (CUR).
- Must have driven cost review cadences directly with engineering leadership, finance, and C-suite stakeholders.
- Must have implemented cost allocation frameworks, showback/chargeback models, or unit economics tracking at scale.
- Must have hands-on scripting skills in Python or equivalent, with the ability to work directly with cost data using SQL, BigQuery, or equivalent.
- Must demonstrate hands-on familiarity with generative AI services (Amazon Bedrock or equivalent) applied to FinOps use cases.
- Experience working with FOCUS CUR Specifications
Key Responsibilities:
FinOps Research & Product Influence:
- Lead research initiatives and POCs exploring new FinOps methodologies, AWS cost management capabilities, and AI-driven optimization approaches.
- Provide opinionated insights and recommendations that influence product strategy, particularly for FinOps and billing-related capabilities.
- Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering on translating FinOps research into reusable capabilities.
- Stay current with FinOps Foundation framework updates, AWS pricing and service changes, and emerging industry patterns. Bring that knowledge back into product direction.
AI-Driven FinOps:
- Design and build AI-powered FinOps capabilities: anomaly detection for unexpected cost movements, predictive forecasting for budget planning, and GenAI-driven executive summaries that reduce manual reporting effort.
- Evaluate emerging AI and ML capabilities for FinOps, including agentic workflows for automated cost investigation and commitment recommendation.
- Bring a strong point of view on where AI fits in the FinOps function and what should remain human-driven.
- Partner with the Cloud SME team and Engineering on shipping AI-powered FinOps patterns into the platform.
Internal Cloud Spend Management:
- Own end-to-end cloud spend management for MontyCloud's internal AWS footprint: visibility, optimization, commitment strategy, and governance.
- Manage the commitment portfolio: analyze coverage, model purchase scenarios, make recommendations, and track realized savings against forecasts.
- Identify waste and optimization opportunities across compute, storage, database, networking, and data transfer. Translate findings into action plans with clear owners and timelines.
- Enforce tagging governance and cost allocation discipline across internal accounts.
Leadership Engagement & Cost Reviews:
- Run monthly and quarterly cost reviews with engineering leadership, finance, and C-suite. Present insights, drive decisions, and track outcomes.
- Deliver clear, insight-driven cost narratives: what is changing, why, and what to do about it.
- Serve as the organization's point of authority on cost questions, commitment strategy, and FinOps best practices.
Dashboards, Reporting & Forecasting:
- Design and maintain executive-level dashboards sourced from CUR, Cost Optimization Hub, and other AWS-native cost intelligence tools.
- Build forecasting models for cloud spend, budget variance analysis, and anomaly detection accurate enough for leadership to plan against.
- Automate cost data extraction, transformation, and reporting pipelines.
Cost Allocation, Unit Economics & Governance:
- Design cost allocation frameworks that distribute shared infrastructure costs across products, features, and business units.
- Build unit economics models tracking cost-per-tenant, cost-per-feature, cost-per-transaction, or equivalent metrics.
- Build showback and chargeback reporting that is repeatable, auditable, and credible to both engineering and finance.
- Establish and maintain FinOps policies and best practices adapted to MontyCloud's scale and business model.
Cloud Operations Knowledge:
Working knowledge of the following, sufficient to collaborate on governance decisions and make informed cost-related trade-offs:
- Core AWS services: EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, Organizations, and their usage characteristics.
- AWS security and access management fundamentals such as IAM policies, least-privilege access, account-level security posture.
- Multi-account AWS architecture: Organizations, Control Tower concepts, account vending, service control policies at a conceptual level.
What Success Looks Like:
- Your research, POCs, and opinionated recommendations shape how FinOps capabilities evolve in the product.
- AI-driven FinOps capabilities you build reduce manual effort and improve accuracy of detection, forecasting, and reporting across the platform.
- Leadership trusts your numbers, your recommendations, and your narrative on internal cloud spend.
- Your dashboards are the single source of truth for cloud spend at MontyCloud, used regularly by finance, engineering, and C-suite.
- Your commitment portfolio decisions save MontyCloud real money, backed by defensible analysis.
- You are the person the organization turns to for any cost optimization or FinOps question.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in cloud operations and financial management, with a strong focus on AWS and FinOps.
- Proven track record leading FinOps as a function at enterprise or SaaS scale.
- Deep expertise with AWS Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), Cost Optimization Hub, Budgets, Compute Optimizer, and Trusted Advisor.
- Strong hands-on experience with Amazon QuickSight, PowerBI, or equivalent dashboarding tools.
- Proficiency in Python or equivalent scripting, SQL, and BigQuery or equivalent for cost data work.
- Hands-on experience with generative AI services for FinOps automation and reporting.
- Working knowledge of core AWS services and AWS security and access management fundamentals.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate insights to both engineering and finance audiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proven ability to drive conversations with engineering leadership and C-suite stakeholders.
- FinOps Certified Practitioner strongly preferred. AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) preferred. AWS Certified AI Practitioner is a plus.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with FinOps tools such as Apptio Cloudability, CloudHealth, or equivalent.
- Familiarity with the FinOps Foundation framework and the Crawl-Walk-Run maturity model.
- Experience with multi-cloud FinOps spanning AWS, Azure, and GCP.
- Knowledge of GreenOps and cloud sustainability metrics.
- Experience with agentic AI workflows and Model Context Protocol (MCP) applied to FinOps.
- Experience contributing to internal tooling or platform capabilities beyond individual engagement delivery.
